A guide to a basic pantry. There are other herbs and spces that you will want to include based on receipes and type of cooking you do.

At her request, I made this list quite a few years ago for my DIL, along with a handwritten cookbook entitled "How Mom Makes It"

All purpose flour
Sugar
Cornmeal
Baking Powder
Baking soda
Corn starch
Salt (sea salt is best)
Black Pepper (both ground & peppercorns are preferable)
Ground cumin
Ground oregano
Leaf oregano
Chili powder
Cayenne pepper
Paprika
Fiesta brand Chili Mix or
GDIY CHILI OR TACO SEASONING (SALLYE)
Garlic powder (NOT garlic salt)
Bay leaves
Diced or minced onions (dried)
Celery salt
Zatarain creole seasoning or HOMEMADE CREOLE SEASONING (SALLYE)
Wild Rice (quick cook and/or regular kind)
Cans of Rotel or Hatch diced tomatoes & green chilis
(I have only found the Hatch tomatoes at HEB but I like them better than Rotel)
Cans of diced tomatoes
Cans of tomato sauce (I use only Hunts)
Cans of tomato paste (I use only Hunts)
Cans of Hunts traditional and/or zesty & spicy spaghetti sauce -this is the best premade spaghetti sauce on the market - beats Ragu or Prego hands down
Chicken & beef bullion powder or cubes
Lemon juice (find in little squeeze dispensers in produce department)
Lime juice (find in little squeeze dispensers in produce department)
Roasted minced garlic (find in jars in produce department)
Worcestershire sauce
Extra virgin olive oil & Canola oil
Soy sauce
Red wine vinegar
Pasta (I usually keep spaghetti, linguini, garden rotini and ziti on hand)
Luzianne family size tea bags

Optional items may include leaf basil, lemon peel, and other spices to your taste

If you have the above items in your pantry, you can always make an impromptu meal for unexpected company.
