Karen's Notes:

My mother always used this recipe for her ribs and chicken. It was always wonderful and always got rave reviews. I never remember a time she made bar-b-que ribs and chicken that she used bottled sauce. She always made her own sauce and we loved it!

Comments from the Test Kitchen: Kitchen Crew

We love this sauce! It is on the sweet side, so we'lI add up to 1/2 cup of vinegar at times depending on the taste of our guests. Terrific on chicken!

Directions

1
Mix Mustard with water and allow to stand 10 minutes.
While the mustard is sitting. cook onions in oil until soft and transparent.
2
Next mix spices and and mustard along with molasses and brown sugar into the sauted onions. Add lemon juice.
3
stir in worstershire sauce, vinegar and liquid smoke.
4
Lastly stir in tomato paste, sauce and ketchup.
5
Let simmer for 10 minutes.
Use immediately or allow to cool and transfer to bottle or jar for storing in refridgerator.
6
Note: You may adjust the ingredients according to your taste. I have added and omitted ingredients at times according to how I wanted to use the sauce and it always turned out very well!

Could I substitute apple cider vinegar? My daughter is highly allergic to distilled vinegar..so no store bought bbq sauce for us. I am just now experimenting for bbq sauce recipes..any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
