This is a delicious Italian Plum Tomato Sauce. Serve it over your favorite pasta, or like my husband, he eats it just by itself.

Oh yum! This is a fabulous homemade tomato sauce. All of the fresh ingredients are what truly makes this sauce exceptional. The plum tomatoes and basil are a perfect combination, but the fresh onion and garlic add tons of flavor too. This may look like a lot of work, but it's pretty simple to make. Serve with your favorite pasta for an Italian restaurant-quality meal.

Ingredients For italian plum tomato sauce

  • 10-15
    ripe plum tomatos
  • 4 clove
    garlic, chopped
  • 1 bunch
    fresh basil leaves
  • 2-4 Tbsp
    olive oil, extra virgin
  • 1 pinch
    red pepper flakes
  • 1 sm
    onion, chopped
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp
    oregano
  • 1 pinch
    sugar

How To Make italian plum tomato sauce

  • Scoring washed tomatoes with an X.

    Wash and score your tomatoes by making a slit across the bottom like an x.
  • Quickly boiling the potatoes.

    Bring a large pot of salted water to boiling. Add the tomatoes to the boiling water for about 1-1/2 minutes.
  • Cooked tomatoes in a strainer.

    Using a ladle, remove the tomatoes and place them in a strainer. Let cool.
  • Peeling plum tomatoes.

    The tomatoes will peel very easily.
  • Diced tomatoes in a bowl.

    Using a cutting board, dice all the tomatoes, keeping the juices.
  • Browning onions and garlic in a skillet.

    In a large skillet, add olive oil and brown the garlic. Add your chopped onion and cook until tender.
  • Diced tomatoes added to the skillet.

    Add your diced tomatoes along with the juice.
  • Salt, pepper, sugar, crushed red pepper, oregano, and basil leaves added to tomatoes.

    Add salt, pepper, pinch of sugar, crushed red pepper and oregano. Add the bunch of basil leaves. This gives the sauce a nice flavor and color.
  • Simmering until the sauce thickens.

    Cook down tomatoes on medium heat, breaking some down. Continue cooking down until sauce thickens, about 45 minutes.
  • Drizzling in olive oil.

    Add a drizzle of olive oil to the tomatoes.
