An old friend of mine told me to get myself a good wooden salad bowl...and never wash it! Supposedly, in the fifties and sixties it is what you did...season the bowl by rubbing garlic into the wood and you are never supposed to wash them lest you disturb the "patina" of flavor. I wash my bowl out of habit, but I love the garlic trick.

How To Make newmsy's awesome salad

  • 1
Smash the clove of garlic into the wooden bowl with your spoon. Then rub the smashed garlic all over the inside of the bowl. Leave garlic in bowl.
  • 2
Freshly squeeze the lemon juice from your lemon into the bowl, taking care to ensure no seeds make it in :)
  • 3
Add the balsamic, olive oil and the rest of the dressing ingredients. Give the bowl a swirl to help incorporate all ingredients together. Cover your bowl with a clean towel. Let sit for at least 20 minutes. This is the first thing I do before starting the main course. The longer it sits, the better, flavor-wise!
