Grandmother's Timeless Cranberry Salad

(12 oz) fresh cranberries
2 to 3
apples, peeled and cored
grind together the cranberries, celery and apples with an old fashioned food grinder or a food processor. color should be a rich red.
add sugar to taste (the amount will depend on how tart the apples are).
spread into a bowl and chill thoroughly.
shortly before serving, spread a layer of whipped cream over the top.
