Notes from the Test Kitchen:
Oh wow, this one brought back some wonderful childhood memories.  When I was a little kid, I always enjoyed apple butter on toast when I went to my Aunt Margaret's.  This apple butter tastes like what I remember from then. Package this apple butter in small jars and it would make a great gift for friends and family.

This is a really easy recipe to prepare.  I used Granny Smith apples. There was a wonderful sweet/tart flavor.

Ingredients

5 lb
tart apples (about 10 lg. apples)
2 c
cider
2 c
sugar
3/4 tsp
cloves
1/2 tsp
allspice
3 tsp
cinnamon
1/2 tsp
nutmeg

Directions Step-By-Step

1
Wash, quarter, and remove stems from apples. No need to peel or core. Cook apples slowly in cider until tender and put through a food mill. Add 1/2 to 2/3 cup sugar for each cup of apple pulp. Add spices. Cook in the oven or in a slow cooker for several hours, stirring often. Test for desired thickness by spooning some of mixture on a cold plate. When no liquid oozes around edges, it is thick enough. May be canned while hot, or frozen.
