GRILLED REUBEN, SOUTHERN STYLE
thousand island dressing
swiss cheese, sandwich-size
2 or 3
hickory smoked ham lunchmeat
sauerkraut, very well drained
1Gather and prep all ingredients.
2Preheat indoor grill, griddle or fry pan. (Medium/medium high heat.)
3Spread half of the butter on 1 side of 1 slice of the pumpernickel; set aside.
4Spread dressing on the second slice of bread.
5Place 1 slice of cheese on top, tearing and arranging cheese to cover bread well.
6Arrange ham slices to cover cheese well.
7Scatter sauerkraut over ham (may use more or less sauerkraut, as desired.)
8Tear and arrange remaining cheese slice over sauerkraut.
9Place buttered slice of bread on top, buttered side up.
10Place sandwich, buttered side down, on grill or pan; spread remaining butter on bread.
11Cook for 1 1/2 to 3 minutes (depending on pan or grill and heat. Be careful not to burn!)
12Turn sandwich over, placing the sandwich in the opposite direction.
13Cook for another minute or 2, until cheese is melted.
14Garnish as desired; serve immediately. Great with pickles and chips on the side.
