My grandmother used to make it - then my mom got the recipe...It was a favorite of ours for years and still is....so simple too. Sorry I couldn't add the prep time-this is a really old recipe so things may vary a bit now with the new appliances altho I still stick to what it says. Maybe it is because it gives me time to reminisce!!!

Ingredients For chop suey

  • 4 c
    onion, chopped
  • 4 c
    celery, chopped
  • 4 c
    water
  • 1 can
    bean sprouts (la choy)
  • 1 1/2 lb
    pork steak, cut into small pieces
  • 1 1/2 lb
    round steak, cut into small pieces
  • 4 Tbsp
    soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    brown sauce
  • 1 Tbsp
    cornstarch or flour

How To Make chop suey

    Boil celery and onions in water for 30 min.
  • 2
    Chop meat into small pieces and fry in a small amount of oil til brown. Pour into onion & celery mixture. Add soy sauce and brown sauce. Simmer 45 min to 1 hr.

    Mix cornstarch (or flour) into a little water and pour into mixture to thicken. Cook 10 min. Serve over steamed rice.
