Ingredients For baked ziti with broccoli rabe and hot italian saus

  • 1 lb
    broccoli rabe
  • 1 lb
    ziti, rigatoni, or penne pasta
  • olive oil, extra virgin
  • 1 lb
    hot italian sausage, casings removed
  • 2 c
    canned, chopped or diced tomatoes
  • 1 tsp
    dried basil
  • 2 c
    shredded provola, provolone or pecorino cheese
  • freshly ground pepper

How To Make baked ziti with broccoli rabe and hot italian saus

    Bring 4 quarts water to boil in large pot, add 1 tablespoon salt and broccoli rabe. Boil 3-5 minutes or until tender. Drain, coarsely chop. Reserve.

    Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Oil 13x9 baking dish. In another large pot, bring 4-6 quarts water to boil. Add 3 Tbs. salt and pasta, cook 10-12 minutes or just until al dente. Drain.

    Meanwhile heat 2 Tbs. oil in large skillet over medium-high heat. Add sausage, cook 5 minutes, breaking up with fork. Add tomatoes and basil. Reduce heat to simmer, cook until sauce just thickens. Stir in broccoli, remove from heat.

    In large bowl, mix pasta, sauce and 1 cup cheese. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon pasta mixture into baking dish, sprinkle with remaining 1 cup cheese. Bake until cheese is golden brown and pasta is hot, 15-20 minutes.
