Mama's Old World Casserole

This was one of my mother's 'speciality' dishes. I must admit, as a child I didn't much care for it, because I didn't like sauerkraut. While mom was not about to cook my dish separately without the sauerkraut (as I tried to talk her into doing) I was allowed to scrape the sauerkraut off my portion.
Now, I love this dish, sauerkraut included!
