I made this chowder mostly in cool weather, but it is good any time. I found it at Allrecipes. The original recipe was from JenLove198. I have tweaked a little.

Ingredients For ham & potato chowder (in slow cooker)

  • *if planning to use fresh celery in place of celery seed, see directions
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • 3 c
    water, warmed in microwave
  • 2 Tbsp
    chicken soup base
  • 1 can
    (10.75 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 4
    potatoes, peeled and cut into 1 in. cubes
  • 1 c
    cubed cooked lean ham
  • 1 c
    corn kernels
  • 1 sm
    yellow onion, diced
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter
  • 1/4 c
    all-purpose or unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 c
    water, warmed in microwave
  • 1 Tbsp
    dried parsley
  • 1 tsp
    dried dill weed
  • 1 tsp
    celery seed or 1/4 cup (or more, if you like) sliced or chopped fresh celery*
  • pepper to taste
  • add other vegetables that you like. i plan to add green beans, carrots, and/or other vegetables, when i have them available

How To Make ham & potato chowder (in slow cooker)

    If planning to use fresh celery in place of celery seed, sauté in the 1 Tb. butter, for 8-10 minutes. Set aside.

    Whisk 3 cups water, warmed in microwave, with the chicken soup base, in slow cooker, until dissolved; stir in cream of chicken soup, until almost smooth.

    Stir potatoes, ham, corn, yellow onion, and butter into soup mixture.

    Place flour and 1/2 cup water, warmed in microwave, into a small container with lid, and shake well, to combine into a smooth mixture; stir mixture into soup. Mix in parsley, dill, and celery seed or sauteed fresh celery. Season with pepper.

    Cook on HIGH for 4 hours or LOW for 8 hours, stirring once or twice, during cooking. Makes 8 servings. Nutrition: One serving 222 cal, 8.4 g fat (3.5 g sat), 20 mg chol, 1051 mg sod, 587 mg potassium, 30.3 g carb, 3.2 g fiber, 7.55 g protein, 2.6 g sugars.
