This is one of favorite comfort food meals. The smoked paprika gives the finished dish a nice smokey flavor and the french fried onions add some sweetness. Served with a nice crunchy green salad, it is truly a perfect meal.

Ingredients For shepherd's pie

  • 1 1/2 lb
    ground chuck
  • 1 sm
    onion, diced
  • 1 sm
    green pepper, diced
  • 1 clove
    garlic, minced
  • 1
    0.87 ounce envelope onion gravy mix
  • 1 c
    water
  • 2 Tbsp
    worcestershire sauce
  • 10 oz
    package frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
  • 1/2 c
    french fried onions
  • 1
    24 ounce container already prepared mashed potatoes, cooked as directed on package
  • 1 Tbsp
    butter
  • 1/2 tsp
    smoked paprika

How To Make shepherd's pie

    Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Coat a 2-quart glass casserole with cooking spray. Set aside.

    Cook the ground chuck in a 4-5 quart Dutch oven over medium high heat for 8-10 minutes or until no longer pink. Drain fat. Add the onion, green pepper and garlic. Mix well and cook another 5-6 minutes.

    Add the gravy mix, water and worcestershire sauce. Mix well and bring to a simmer.

    Add the vegetables and French fried onions. Mix well and cook until heated through, about 5-6 minutes.

    Transfer to prepared casserole dish.

    Add butter to heated potatoes. Mix well and spoon "dollops" on top of meat mixture in casserole in a ring around the edge of dish. Leave space in center exposed.

    "Rake" fork thru potatoes to distribute evenly.
  • 8
    Sprinkle with smoked paprika.

    Bake for 35-40 minutes or until hot and bubbly and potatoes just start to brown.
