This recipe is a strata, similar to my Christmas breakfast casserole. But, the addition of broccoli and French fried onions, makes it a dinner main dish.

Ingredients For baked ham & cheese monte cristo casserole

cooking spray for greasing baking dish

6slices bread, divided

2 c(8 oz) shredded cheddar cheese, divided (could also use shredded swiss)

1 1/2 cfrench fried onions, divided

1 pkg(10 oz) frozen broccoli spears, thawed, drained and cut into 1 inch pieces

2 c(10 oz) cubed cooked ham (save time with already cubed ham)

5 lgeggs
-
2 c2% milk
-
1/2 tspground mustard
-
1/2 tspseasoned salt
-
1/4 tspcoarsely ground black pepper
How To Make baked ham & cheese monte cristo casserole

1Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease a 12 x 8 baking dish, with cooking spray.

2Cut 3 bread slices, into cubes; place in prepared baking dish. Top bread with 1 cup cheese, 2/3 cup French fried onions, broccoli and ham.

3Cut remaining bread slices diagonally into halves. Arrange bread halves down center of casserole, overlapping slightly, crusted points all in one direction.

4In a medium bowl, beat eggs, milk and seasonings; pour evenly over casserole.

5Bake, uncovered, in preheated oven for 1 hour, or until center is set. Top with remaining 1 cup cheese and 2/3 cup onions; bake, uncovered, 5 minutes or until onions are golden brown. Let stand 10 minutes, before serving.
