I quit introducing Cara as my wicked step-daughter after she prepared this Runza casserole dish and shared the recipe with me!

Blue Ribbon Recipe

This Runza casserole is amazing. The crescent dough that sandwiches in the casserole on the top and bottom is slightly buttery and sweet. It's a nice contrast with the savory meat and cabbage mixture inside. It may seem like a lot of onions, but they cook down and lend such a nice flavor. We went heavy on the pepper when seasoning the ground meat and cabbage and liked the final result. What makes this special, though, is the pound of grated ooey gooey cheese. A quick and easy casserole!

How To Make runza casserole

Test Kitchen Tips
Step 3 mentions adding a thickener. We did not find this dry and did not think it needed a thickener. If you want to include one, though, an undiluted canned cream soup would work well. Also, if you can find the crescent dough sheets, those are a timesaver.
  • Oven preheating to 350 degrees.
    1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Layer of crescent dough in a baking dish.
    2
Spread one tube of crescent rolls into the bottom of a 9x13 pan and bake 7 minutes or until brown.
  • Browning ground beef and onions.
    3
Meanwhile, brown the hamburger and onion in a skillet. (Add your choice of a thickener at this point if you would prefer more of a gravy texture.)
  • Cabbage added to the browned beef.
    4
Drain the grease from the hamburger and add the cabbage. Let steam for a few minutes.
  • Seasoning salt and pepper.
    5
    Add the salt and pepper.
  • Hamburger mixture poured into the baking dish.
    6
Spread the hamburger/cabbage mixture into the pan on top of the baked crescent dough.
  • Cheese sprinkled on top of the ground beef.
    7
Sprinkle the cheese on top of the meat mixture.
  • Crescent dough on top of the ground beef.
    8
Spread the second tube of crescent rolls over the top of the cheese.
  • Runza Casserole baking in the oven.
    9
Bake for 35-40 minutes, covering with foil the last 10 minutes to soften the crust.
