Donna's Notes:

I've often heard that some firemen are really good cooks. I cut this recipe out of the paper about 25 years ago. It is from an article on the good cooks that work in Jackson, TN as firemen and the meals they prepare for the firefighters when they are on duty. This steak is so tender and the "gravy" it makes is delicious.

Comments from the Test Kitchen: Kitchen Crew

The flavor of this dish is incredible. It was overwhelming approved by the Kitchen Crew AND my son has asked that I make it for his next company party. Now that's one big seal of approval. Enjoy!

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Cut steak into serving sized pieces and dredge in flour. There's no need to brown, according to the recipe, but I did. Put floured steak in a large pot with a lid. (I use a large cast iron Dutch oven with a top.) Mix other ingredients in a bowl. Pour tomato mixture over steak, cover and bake about 1 1/2 hours or until tender. It's really good with biscuits or Texas Toast.

Well, I have my Firehouse Steak Soup in the crockpot right now. It is starting to smell really good! I am going to make my jalapeno cornbread to go with it.

Well, I am certainly going to try it in soup. Are you making it like a vegetable soup with a tomato base?

Yes, I put the vegetables in it, more tomatoes and the meat, and it smells good! I think it should be called Firehouse Stoup, like Rachel Ray says, meaning it is between a soup and a stew! LOL!

Sounds great, I love Rachel, she comes up with terms I find myself using a lot, like EVOO - Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

Yes! We do that, too, we don't call it anything bu EVOO! You know it is in the dictionary as a word now? I saw them present the dictionary to Rachel on TV. She was all smiles. I really like her a lot and the 30 minute meals are right up my alley!
