Barbecued Beef (Korean Bul Kogi)

2 lb
sirloin steak
cloves garlic
5 Tbsp
soy sauce
2 Tbsp
sesame oil
1/4 c
2 Tbsp
1/4 c
beef stock
1/8 tsp
black pepper


1Slice the steak very thin on the bias.

2Score each piece with an X.

3Chop the scallions and crush the garlic.

4Combine these ingredients with the remaining seasonings in a bowl.

5Add the meat to the marinade and mix well until all sides of the steak are coated.

6The meat may be grilled immediately.

7The best results are obtained if the steak is marinated for 2 hours.

8The marinade will keep overnight.

9Variation: Use rib steak or flank steak.

10Bul Kogi is so popular that many Koreans consider it the national meat dish.

11Serve with rice and kimchi.
