Diane's Notes:

This is so refreshing on a hot summer day. If you want to dress this up for a party, put a lemon slice, a strawberry and a lime slice on a skewer and lay on top of the glass. It also works well if you want to add vodka to make a mixed drink.
Enjoy!!

Comments from the Test Kitchen: Kitchen Crew

Deliciously fruity with just a bit of tangy sweetness. We loved this super simple drink, and highly recommend it on any hot afternoon!

Directions

1
Add can of defrosted Lemonade concentrate and strawberries to a blender, and puree on high until well blended.
2
Fill two glasses with ice. Add enough concentrate to make 1/3 glass. Divide one bottle Ginger Beer between two glasses, add lime twist and serve.

What is ginger beer? Is it like ginger ale? How big a bottle? A 2 liter, a 20 oz, what?

I think it might be Root Beer.

Ginger beer is normally fermented but you can use one of those soda siphons or home carbonation devices. It's definitely not the same as root beer. I would substitute a good quality ginger ale, especially if you can find the sharply spicy hot ginger ale. I've only seen that where I used to live. A local monastery made it and sold it within a few miles of them. It was so spicy hot that it would bring tears to your eyes!

I'll bet you could substitute Vernor's Ginger Ale if you can get it. I remember we had ginger beer a couple of times when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it recently. You could also probably use any ginger ale, and "fortify" it by adding a splash of Jo Zimny's Ginger Juice. I've made ginger lemonade (without the strawberries) before by making a ginger simple syrup, simmering thin slices of fresh ginger in a simple syrup, then straining them out. The extra bonus here is that you get candied ginger slices as a bonus--all you have to do is spread them out and dry them!

Congrats on the blue ribbon!! I'm going to have to try this one out this weekend! It is somewhat similar to my "Elmer FuddPucker" (sans the vodka), so I'm definitely game at trying it. The addition of pureed strawberries sounds reeeeally tasty....like a fizzy strawberry lemonade! Great recipe! :-D

Is Vernor's a "spicy" enough ginger-ale to make this with?

I found Ginger Beer at a health food store called Lassen's and at Trader Joe's. It is non-alcholic and great chilled over ice all alone. I think it is a stronger version of ginger ale....
