This is the basically the very same (or quite similar) recipe for a classic Tom Collins cocktail that can be found on almost all mixology and cocktail websites. It's really good and quite refreshing on a hot summer day. I'm not exactly sure of its history, but it seems to have originated in New York in the late 1800s and was a modern variation of a popular libation, the John Collins, that was popular in the 1800s in London.

Ingredients For tom collins

  • 2 oz
    gin (old tom gin, if possible--otherwise, any quality gin will work)
  • 1 oz
    fresh lemon juice
  • 2-3 tsp
    superfine sugar
  • 3 oz
    carbonated water (club soda or seltzer water)
  • ice cubes
  • 1
    maraschino cherry - for garnish
  • 1 slice
    orange - for garnish

How To Make tom collins

    In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the gin, lemon juice, and sugar.

    Shake well, and strain into a tall Collins glass almost filled with ice cubes.

    Add the club soda, and garnish with a cherry and orange slice.
