german holiday drink, "gluhwein"

This is a recipe I got from my German friend, Julie. It's very nice to sip on a cold evening...this will warm you right up! Pronounced "gloo-vine", though my boyfriend and I started jokingly calling it "Glooberwine" last year and it stuck :)

Ingredients For german holiday drink, "gluhwein"

  • 1 1/2 l
    bottle of red wine (i use merlot)
  • 4 to 5
    cinnamon sticks
  • 10
    whole cloves
  • 1
    tangerine or mandarin orange (zest and juice)
  • 1
    lemon (zest)
  • 1 c
    sugar

How To Make german holiday drink, "gluhwein"

    Combine all the ingredients in a large pot and heat slowly over low heat until steaming hot. *BUT DON'T LET IT COME TO A BOIL, OR THE ALCOHOL WILL COOK OUT, AND THAT'S NO FUN!*

    Continue to heat slowly so the flavors can mingle and infuse the wine.

    When ready to drink, strain the heated wine into a large pitcher, pour into coffee mugs.

    If you don't have a zester, you can put slices of the lemon and orange in the mix instead.
