Hi Shellie,
The additions/aromas are to be put straight away when you make the base mix, and yes they are necessary because after all they are the flavor.
When you filter the liqueur, what's left is a sweet vodka (vodka + sugar) that has a milk after taste (smoothness), so you will be left with a completely transparent tasteless light alcohol!! (the filtered milk will take away from the rawness of the alcohol, makes the final product smoother)
The real taste is actually in the additions, so you can go with what is mentioned in the recipe above or you can just create your own signature liqueur, for example you can put dried apple, any sort of berries, spices you like etc. They will give color of the final product and will give it its identity really.
So go ahead open that jar and put everything in it and let it steep for 10 days and see what happens. Let's hope you will like it :)
Have fun ;)

No refrigeration. I kept my jar in a cupboard, away from excess heat and light. Now I still have half a bottle, keeping in with other alcohol bottles in the dining room cabinet. If you wanna drink it chilled you can refrigerate it after filtration (final product), otherwise it doesn't need to.
PS: If you like your liqueur to be strong, I think you should add the vodka amount a little bit.
