This drink is named after a beach in Cuba. The original drink was first recorded in a Cuban mining town named Daiquiri (near Santiago, Cuba) at the time of the Spanish-American War. The frozen version was created at Havana's La Floridita where it was first blended with shaved ice. It gained in popularity when it was said to be a favorite cocktail choice of Ernest Hemingway and President JFK. It was also a frequently ordered cocktail in the 1940s when whiskey, vodka and other liquors were rationed during the War. And it remains popular today, currently the 6th most sold cocktail in the world.
