captain marryat julep (virginia)
Get ready to wrap your hands around one of the oldest recorded julep recipes. Though most often associated with Kentucky, the julep was actually invented in Virginia where it was prepared with brandy instead of bourbon. An Englishman named Captain Marryat was touring the U.S. in the 1800’s when he discovered the refreshing beauty of the julep. This recipe, served at Julep’s in Richmond, follows his original blueprint – apple and peach brandy, fresh mint and simple syrup over a mound of crushed ice.
