If you don't care for the taste of boxed banana pudding then this recipe is for you. It is the way my mother always made it. I love to eat it while it is still warm.

There's nothing like homemade banana pudding and this recipe is super simple. The from-scratch vanilla pudding is smooth and creamy. When you layer the pudding between vanilla wafer cookies and sliced bananas, this classic Southern dessert is a fantastic treat.

Ingredients For sherry's old-fashioned homemade banana pudding

  • vanilla wafers
  • 3
    ripe bananas
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 1/4 c
    corn starch
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 3
    egg yolks
  • 2 c
    milk
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp
    butter

How To Make sherry's old-fashioned homemade banana pudding

  • Vanilla wafers layered in a bowl.

    Place vanilla wafers on the bottom and along the sides of a large bowl or casserole dish.
  • Sugar, corn starch, salt, milk, and egg whisked together in a bowl.

    In a medium-sized saucepan, mix together the sugar, corn starch, salt, milk and egg. BEFORE turning on the burner stir all ingredients together making sure corn starch has dissolved. Corn starch will NOT dissolve in hot liquid.
  • Adding vanilla and butter to the saucepan.

    Heat on medium - medium-high heat stirring or whisking constantly until the pudding has thickened. Remove from heat, add butter and vanilla. Mix well.
  • Sliced bananas on top of the vanilla wafers.

    Slice bananas and spread over vanilla wafers. Pour pudding over bananas.

    For garnish, crumble a few vanilla wafers and sprinkle over pudding. Serve warm or cold.
