old-time spiced bread pudding

I have been making this for about 45 years. This is the bread pudding I compare all others to and they all seem to come up a little short. I have this in the oven right now and the house smells wonderful!

Ingredients For old-time spiced bread pudding

  • 6 slice
    firm white bread buttered generously with about a half stick of butter
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1/2 tsp
    each of cinnamon and ground allspice
  • 1/8 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 1/2 c
    milk, scalded

How To Make old-time spiced bread pudding

  • 1
    Dice buttered bread into a 1 1/2 quart shallow baking pan. Sprinkle with brown sugar mixed with spices. Beat salt and eggs slightly. Gradually beat in scalded milk and pour over bread. Bake in preheated 325 oven for about 30 minutes or until set.

    Serve warm with whipped cream, ice cream or cherry jam.
