I perfected this sweet, buttery, crunchy pie years ago and it's now my top seller. It is requested at every holiday or gathering and was my dad's very favorite! If you use Golden Delicious (some people like them as a baking apple), use the smaller amount of sugar in the filling. I vary the amount depending on the mix of apples I use at the time. I use at least 3 different varieties of apples in my pies. My favorites are Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Jonagold, Granny Smith, and Gala. I love Penzey's Pie Spice, but it's not necessary. If you don't have it, double the cinnamon and nutmeg.

How To Make pleasin' apple crumb pie

  • 1
    Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • 2
Combine sugar, flour, spices and salt in a small bowl. Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and then add them to sugar mixture. Toss to coat. Let sit for a few minutes until you see apples appearing juicy.
  • 3
Combine topping ingredients in a bowl by mixing with fingers, breaking up large pieces of butter. Mix until well incorporated (not powdery, but not large chunks).
  • 4
Pile apples high in 9 inch pie shell. Dot with 1 T butter.
  • 5
Gently pat topping on top of apples using your hand to prevent crumbs from falling off. Don't press, just pat lightly.
  • 6
Bake at 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Lower temperature to 375 degrees and bake for another 45 minutes until toothpick inserted reveals apples are cooked. Juices will be thick and bubbly, topping and crust will be golden brown. If you notice crust getting too brown halfway through baking time, cover edges with foil or a crust protector.
