Granny Carvell's Chocolate Pie

This recipe was one of my grandmother's signature pies! She was the best cook ever, and this pie is simply delicious! Growing up, my mother made it, and I love to lick the pan!

This recipe works best if cooked in a heavy aluminum dutch oven size pan. I use a piece from Club Aluminum that my mom had forty years ago!

Ingredients

3 Tbsp
butter or margarine
1/2 c
cocoa
1 c
suga
1/2 c
self rising flour
3
egg yolks (retain whites in large mixing bowl for meringue)
1 1/2 c
milk
1 tsp
vanilla
1
unbaked pie shell

MERINGUE

reserved egg whites
3 tsp
sugar

Directions Step-By-Step

Bake pie shell for 10 - 15 minutes in 350 degree oven while you prepare filling.

In heavy aluminum dutch oven style pan, melt butter over low heat.

Add sugar, cocoa and flour.

Add milk and egg yolks, stirring well.

Use wire whisk to stir over medium heat. Beat with whisk to make sure all flour is broken up and well blended.

Switch to large metal spoon, stirring continually until thickened to pudding consistency.

Add vanilla and beat well with spoon.

Pour filling into baked pie shell, and set aside while you prepare meringue.

In large mixing bowl, beat egg whites on low speed. Add sugar, one teaspoon at a time. Increase mixer speed to medium for three minutes. Continue to mix at high speed until stiff peaks are formed.

Top pie with meringue, sealing the edges. Put into 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes until well browned.
