Want to make a homemade apple pie? This recipe has all the classic flavors of an apple pie but is super easy to make thanks to store-bought crust. The pie is jam-packed with apples and has the perfect amount of spices. Sugar is sprinkled on top of the crust which caramelizes a little after the apple pie is baked. Yum!

Ingredients For classic apple pie

  • PIE FILLING
  • 2 lb
    Honey Crisp apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 1 1/2 lb
    Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • 3/4 c
    sugar
  • 2 Tbsp
    all-purpose flour
  • lemon zest, grated from 1 lemon
  • 1
    lemon, juiced
  • 1/4 tsp
    salt
  • 1/4 tsp
    nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp
    cinnamon
  • CRUST
  • 1 pkg
    refrigerated pie crusts, at room temperature
  • 1
    egg white, slightly beaten
  • 1 Tbsp
    sugar

How To Make classic apple pie

  • Oven set to preheat to 500 degrees.

    Place a rimmed baking sheet on the lowest oven rack and preheat to 500 degrees.
  • Tossing apples with sugar, flour, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, and spices.

    Toss the apples with 3/4 cup of sugar, flour, lemon juice, lemon zest, salt, and spices; set aside.
  • Pie crust placed in pie pan.

    Lightly spray a glass pie plate with non-stick spray. Unroll one of the pie crusts and place it into the pie plate making sure to center. Leave excess crust dough hanging around the edges.
  • Apples poured into the crust.

    Spread the apples in the unbaked pie crust bottom, mounding them slightly in the middle.
  • Second crust on the pie and crimping the edges.

    Unroll the second pie crust and lay it on top of the apple mixture. Seal and crimp the edges of the pie crusts.
  • Vent slits cut into the crust.

    Cut four vent slits in the top of the pie.
  • Egg white and sugar on the crust.

    Brush top of crust with egg white and sprinkle with 1 Tbsp sugar.
  • Apple pie baking in the oven.

    Place pie on a baking sheet and reduce oven temp to 425. Bake until the top is golden, about 25 minutes. Rotate the baking sheet and reduce oven temp to 375. Continue to bake until the juices are bubbling and the crust is a deep golden brown - 30 to 35 minutes longer.
  • Slice of Classic Apple Pie on a plate.

    Transfer the pie to a wire rack and cool to room temperature before serving.
