Laura's Notes:

I made this pie when our children were small and just "revived" it a couple of years ago. It is a favorite of one of our sons. I have also carried it to family gatherings and it is always enjoyed.

When I saw this recipe I knew that I had to try it.  I am always looking for that perfect recipe to satisfy my chocolate cravings.... and this sure did the trick!

Give it a try - I'm sure you'll enjoy it. And if you have any trouble with the mixture thickening properly, just add more flour and cocoa.

Directions

1
Mix sugar, flour, salt, and cocoa in top of double boiler.
2
Stir in milk and cook for 15 minutes over hot water, stirring constantly until thick.
3
Add egg yolks and cook 3 minutes.
4
Add butter, cool.
5
Add vanilla and pour into baked 9" pie shell.
6
Make meringue from remaining 3 egg whites, using 6 tablespoons sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice or 3/4 teaspoon cream of tartar.
7
Spread on pie and bake at 350 degrees for about 15 to 20 minutes.

I'm going to try this....my memaw,(grandmother), use to make a pie like this and I have never been able to duplicate it. She passed before I could get the recipe from her....she kept everything in head, not on paper. This sounds a lot like it, even down to the meringue! I'm so excited to try this out for christmas.....I'll let you know how it turns out!

This is just like the pie my mom and grandma used to make. I have been making it for years. My sons favorite substitution is to spread a container of cool whip over the top in place of the meringue. My husband likes it just plain without whipped cream or meringue.

Al, no particular story behind the "ladyofthelake". When I registered I had to choose a "name" and since I live within sight of the lake, I chose that name.
