School Lunch Peanut Butter Bars

This is the only recipe I have from my days teaching school at Saint Helen's and the Lunch Ladies.

2 c
all purpose flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1/4 tsp
1 c
real butter
1 c
nutty peanut butter
1 large
banana, mashed, may be added to the batter with the peanut butter, optional
2 large
1/2 c
granulated sugar
1/2 c
dark brown sugar, firmly packed
1 tsp
vanilla extract
2 c
old fashioned oatmeal or corn flakes or some of both
1 1/2 c
chocolate chips, mini, sprinkle and spread on hot bars then let cool, optional


1Heat oven to 350^. Grease or spray a 9x13-inch baking pan; set aside.
Combine flour, baking soda and salt, set aside.
2Cream together in a large bowl the butter, peanut butter (and banana,if using) until smooth and blended add sugars and vanilla; beat in eggs.
Add flour mixture and blend. Stir in oatmeal,stirring to blend well.
3Spread batter into prepared pan Bake for 15 to 18 minutes. ]Let cool in pan on wire rack;then cut into squares.
If desired you can frost or sprinkle with powdered sugar;or sprinkle with the chocolate chips let melt then spread on evenly while hot.
