Hey Bea,
Taro is a root that comes from the bottom part of a taro plant, in Hawaii we use the whole plant-the leaves are used to make Lau Lau which is like a little pouch that's wrapped with pork, fish, & some taro its steamed & after several hours eaten it's like a form of starch. Well the leaves are cleaned & the outter layer of the stem is removed (if not removed it can make your throat itch). The root is cleaned & steamed then pounded to create poi it can also be used to be sliced & mixed to create a dessert - here in Hawaii there are a lot of uses for taro - it is our starch just like pasta, rice, bread, etc., I hope this clears your mind as far as what is taro. Much Mahalo's (Thank You's) to that question.

Hey Bea,
Anytime, I sometimes forget that in other areas of the US people don't know about taro. Hawaii is a good place to visit but when you understand the people that actually live here then maybe you will try the different types of foods that we have. So stay tuned at all the local hawaii recipes that I will be posting here on my page. Much Aloha & Mahalo's for your comments.
