Ingredients For apple-almond bars

  • BARS:
  • 2 cups
    flour
  • 1/2 cup
    sugar
  • 1/2 tsp.
    baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp.
    salt
  • 1 cup
    butter
  • 1/2 cup
    sliced almonds
  • 2
    egg yolks, slightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup
    sugar
  • 1/4 cup
    flour
  • 1 tsp.
    ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp.
    ground nutmeg
  • 4 cups
    sliced apples, using either rome, golden delicious, granny smith or jonathan
  • ICING:
  • 3/4 cup
    sifted powdered sugar
  • 1-1/2 TBSP
    milk
  • 1/4 tsp.
    almond extract

How To Make apple-almond bars

    In a large bowl, stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

    Cut in butter, until pieces are the size of small peas.

    Stir in the almonds and eggs with a fork. Press half the mixture (about 2 cups) into the bottom of an ungreased 13x9x2-inch baking pan; set pan aside.

    In another large bowl, stir together the 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup flour, cinnamon and nutmeg.

    Add the apples; toss to coat, then arrange evenly over mixture in pan.

    Bake in a 350º oven for about 35 minutes, or until topping is golden brown.

    Cool completely.

    Drizzle bars with icing, and let stand until set, then cut into bars.

    To make the icing: In a small bowl stir together until smooth, the powdered sugar, milk, and almond extract.
