In a medium sized bowl, cream shortening or oil with the sugar.
2Add the egg and molasses and mix well ( I just use a wooden spoon for this. )
3Next, add 1 cup of flour along with the spices and baking soda. Mix well. Now, add remaining flour, just enough to be able to roll a ball. I used approx 2 cups altogether. You want the ball to keep shape to roll into sugar.
4Make balls about the size of a golf ball. Roll to coat in sugar and place on baking sheet..a few inches apart.
5Bake for 8 - 10 minutes, or when puffed and cracking. They will look a bit undercooked, but will finish baking on sheet, when removed from oven.
Let set on sheet for about 3 - 4 minutes, before moving to cooling rack. I sometimes sprinkle extra sugar on while still warm.
