This has been my favorite frosting, since I was a child! Very rich--reiminiscent of brown sugar fudge. Super on Bourbon Cake, Jam Cake, Spice Cake, & a variety of other cakes, cupcakes & cookies! Originally from Better Homes & Gardens Cook Book.

Ingredients For brown sugar / penuche frosting

  • 1/2 c
    butter, melted
  • 1 c
    brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 c
    hot milk
  • 3 1/4 c
    confectioner's sugar

How To Make brown sugar / penuche frosting

  • 1
    Melt 1/2 cup butter; then, add 1 cup brown sugar. Bring to a boil; cook, and stir 1 minute, or until slightly thick. Cool 15 minutes.

    Add, 1/4 cup hot milk, and beat smooth. Beat in enough of the 3 1/4 cups of confectioners' sugar, for spreading consistency. Frosts 1 sheet cake or 2 - 8 or 9 inch layers.
