12 - 15, depending on pan
raisins (soaked for 5 minutes in boiling water and drained)
chopped walnuts or pecans, optional
Cream shortening and sugar. Beat in egg and vanilla.
Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with applesauce and water.
Stir in raisins and nuts.
Bake in prepared layer pans at 350 degrees for 30 - 40 minutes or until they test done when inserting a toothpick. Can also be baked in a ring, 13x9 or loaf pans.
Frost with buttercream frosting.
