Ingredients

BARS:

1 1/2 c
butter or shortening
1/2 c
granulated sugar
2 large
egg yolks, beaten
1/4 tsp
almond extract
1 1/4 c
cake flour
1/2 tsp
salt
1 tsp
baking powder
2 Tbsp
water

TOPPING:

1 large
egg white, beaten stiff
1 c
brown sugar, sifted
1 c
slivered almonds

beat the egg,until stiff. fold in brown sugar.spread over unbaked bars and sprinkle with nuts. bake at 325^ for 30 minutes.

ALTERNATE TOPPING:

1/2 c
almond paste
1/4 c
granulated sugar
2 large
egg whites, beaten stiff
directions
work the almond paste and sugar together and combine with the stiffly beaten egg whites. cover baked bars with mixture and bake until the topping is firm and lightly colored. remove from oven and let cool slightly. cut into bars and place on a rack

Heat oven to 325^. Grease a 7x11-inch baking pan or glass dish. Set aside.

BARS:
Cream the shortening and sugar together, add the egg yolks which have been beaten until stiff and lemon colored, add the almond extract.

Sift the flour, salt and baking powder together and add alternately with the water to the creamed mixture. Spread in prepared pan.
Set aside and make topping you desire.
