This is my go to cookie recipe. I remember making them for my son's 4th birthday and he is over 40 now. They are great for any occasion. Use any shape cookie cutter. Originally named Valentine Sugar Cookies.

How To Make holiday sugar cookies

  • 1
    Cream shortening and sugar.
  • 2
Add eggs and vanilla. Mix well.
  • 3
Combine dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture.
  • 4
Divide dough in half. Shape into logs or 2 balls. Wrap in wax paper and chill at least 1 hour. Then remove from refrigerator and cut into about 3 pieces and stack each piece on top of the other and press together until it is pliable (knead it) and forms a ball. Do the same for the other half.
  • 5
Roll dough to 1/4 inch thickness on lightly floured surface. Cut with any shaped cookie cutter. Re-work leftover dough scraps, roll and cut out until all dough is used.
  • 6
Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned. Repeat with remaining dough.
  • 7
    Frost with Decorator Frosting.
  • 8
DECORATOR FROSTING: Cream butter and sugar, add milk and vanilla or almond extract. (I usually use almond) Stir in food coloring.
  • 9
Spread on cooled cookies. Decorate as desired.
