Carol's Notes:

So good for ya ! Love hermits, had many different recipes for them and this is the best one I have found.

Love the wonderful aroma that fills the house while cooking them. My daughter made these up tonight ~

This one came from a classmate of my husband, his wife had brought them over to us when we invited them for dinner one night! Had to have the recipe.

Directions

1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

CREAM TOGETHER:
Sugar and crisco ~ Beat in eggs ~ then add molasses and water and mix until smooth. SET ASIDE
( Some have suggested that these are to sweet and have cut the white sugar amount down. So be aware of that if you don't want them to sweet)
2
SIFT TOGETHER:
Flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and ginger.
Add to liquid ingredients.
ADD:
Nuts and raisins
3
Grease a large cookie sheet. Make 3 lengths about 3 inches wide. Sprinkle tops with sugar.

Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes. Do not overcook, will be dry, check at 15
Cool and cut.

Wow, I haven't heard of these before and they look amazing! So, there is no chocolate in them? What do they taste like? Or what could you compare the flavor to? So unique and different....oh what wonderful spices in there too!!

You guys are kidding me, right? Been having hermits since I was little, my mom used to make em. They taste like molasses cookies, wonderful ! Most recipes I tried are to dry I like em gooey and moist. But if you cook em the full 20 minutes (only cooked em 15) they will be dryer. You guys better make em , geez, can't believe this.

Carol, I used to think "Texas" was a whole other world but I am thinking "MA" is like that too. I must get up there and visit one day. Nope, not had a Hermit before; I have known hermits and on occasion have dabled in being on myself at times but I haven't indulged in this luxury before. OK,so you know the next thing I am going to tell you is to submit this one too. WOW, a winning recipe for sure!
