good old fashioned sugar cookies

Baking cookies, especially around the holidays, is a tradition in my family. I got this recipe from one of my sisters years ago. This recipe will make about 3 dozen cookies. Just a couple of tips if you aren't familiar with making rolled cookies: The dough needs to be chilled for easier handling. Use as little flour as possible when rolling it out. When rolling and cutting, use only a portion of the dough at a time; leave the rest in the refrigerator until you are ready to roll and cut the next batch for baking. When rolling, start from the center out towards the edges; after a few gentle rolling strokes check to see if the dough is sticking. If it is, sprinkle a little more flour under and on top of dough.
