Linda Myers - this recipe comes from Great Aunt Minnie. A favorite of us all, it is a soft cookie and is better if it has aged a few days.

Ingredients

CREAM

1 c
molasses/sorghum
1 c
lard (no substitutions)
1 c
brown sugar

ADD

1 c
boiling water in which 4 teaspoons baking soda has been dissolved

MIX ABOVE INGREDIENTS WELL, ADD

1 tsp
ginger
1 tsp
allspice
1 tsp
cloves
4 3/4 c
flour
1 tsp
cinnamon
1 tsp
salt
1/2 tsp
nutmeg

Directions Step-By-Step

Refrigerate overnight. Divide dough into 3 parts.

Using lots of flour, roll out about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes; sprinkle with sugar before baking.

Bake at 350 degrees on a well greased cookie sheet for 15 minutes until slightly brown on edges but still soft by the fingertip test (touch lightly, if done it will spring right back).
