This is one of my husband's favorites! If you have a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, you can use it to create these bars.

Quick note: I tried to just melt the caramels and drizzle them instead of chopping them into quarters. Do NOT do this. The caramel turned out kinda hard and I definitely did not like how it turned out as well as when I did it the other way. Maybe if I had drizzled it AFTER baking it would have been better.

firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 c
sugar
1/2 c
butter, softened
1/2 c
shortening
1 1/2 tsp
vanilla
1
egg
1 3/4 c
all purpose flour
1 tsp
baking soda
1/4 tsp
salt
1 c
chocolate chips
1/2 c
chopped nuts (i prefer pecans)
1 c
m&ms (i use plain, but you can use peanut m&ms or a mix of plain and peanut)
12
caramel candies, cut into quarters

Step-By-Step

1Heat oven to 375. In large bowl, combine brown sugar, sugar, butter and shortening. Add vanilla and egg; beat well.
2In separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Add to sugar mixture. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.
3Spread cookie dough into an ungreased 13x9 inch pan. Sprinkle with M&Ms and caramel pieces. Press candies lightly into the dough.
4Bake at 375 for 15-25 minutes until light golden brown. Cool and cut into bars. Makes about 24 bars, depending on how large you cut them.
