I chuckle when I make these and get rave reviews because the recipe was a "leftover" from one of my husband's college years. Important baking note: if the cookies brown, they are TOO done!

Ingredients For best ever snickerdoodles

  • 1 c
    vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 2
    eggs
  • 2 3/4 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 2 tsp
    cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • FOR TOPPING:
  • 3 Tbsp
    sugar cinnamon mixture

How To Make best ever snickerdoodles

    Preheat oven to 375F. Sift all dry ingredients together in a bowl.

    Cream shortening and sugar, then add each egg, mixing well between additions. Add flour mixture slowly, mixing until well combined and being sure to scrape sides of bowl. You may need to chill dough for a few minutes to make it more easily workable.

    Use small scoop or teaspoons to divide dough into cookie sized portions. roll between hands to form a ball, dip one side of ball into cinnamon sugar mixture and make sure that side is up when the cookie is placed on an un-greased cookie sheet. Place each bit of dough 2 inches apart and bake for 8-10 minutes being careful to not allow too much browning.
