This is my favorite candy. Have been making this since 1982. We make this at least twice during Christmas. The recipe was featured in Southern Living's most requested dessert recipes for the last 25 years, prior to 1982.
Melt margarine in 15 x 10 x 1 inch jellyroll pan. Spread pecans evenly in pan. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Place candy coating in top of a double boiler, bring water to boil. Reduce heat to low until coating melts. Cool 2 minutes, add pecans and stir until coated. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto wax paper. Let cool completely. You can break into sizes you prefer. I like them small. Put into zip lock bags.
