This recipe is from my Grandmother Jordan. I under stand that her Grand mother gave it to her. That would be my Great Grandmother Jordan. I think 4 genarations.

Ingredients For war time cake

  • 1/2 c
    sugar
  • 1 c
    white syrup
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1/2 c
    shortening
  • 2 c
    cake flour sifted
  • 1/2 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1/2 c
    buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp
    each cinnamon and nutmeg

How To Make war time cake

  • 1
    Beat sugar, syrup, eggs, and shortening well mixed.
  • 2
    Add buttermilk and flour that has been sifted with soda, salt, and spices.

    Bake in layer or loaf pan 35 to 40 minutes at 350 degrees.

    For Devils Food, omit the spices and add 3 squares of chocolate or 1/2 cup cocoa dissolved in 1/2 cup of boiling water.
