1 c white syrup
2 eggs
1/2 c shortening
2 c cake flour sifted
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c buttermilk
1/2 tsp each cinnamon and nutmeg

This recipe is from my Grandmother Jordan. I under stand that her Grand mother gave it to her. That would be my Great Grandmother Jordan. I think 4 genarations.

Beat sugar, syrup, eggs, and shortening well mixed.

Add buttermilk and flour that has been sifted with soda, salt, and spices.

Bake in layer or loaf pan 35 to 40 minutes at 350 degrees.

For Devils Food, omit the spices and add 3 squares of chocolate or 1/2 cup cocoa dissolved in 1/2 cup of boiling water.

Eddie my mother used to make a war time cake but it had no eggs, butter or milk (maybe it had milk) if I remember correctly
