Tarred Roof Cake!

This is popular at gatherings in our small town, and it was also called: Tar Paper Cake. My husband adores this cake, it's HIS FAVORITE BIRTHDAY CAKE. He is a builder, and when a roof is built, it is closed in and a layer of "tar paper" is nailed on the roof before it is shingled.This "tar paper" is the unsweetened layer of chocolate that is spread over the white frosting on a white cake!

Ingredients

1 pkg
white cake mix, baked according to directions

OR FOR A HOMEMADE CAKE:

2 1/2 c
sifted cake flour
1 1/2 c
sugar
3 tsp
baking powder
1 tsp
salt
1/2 c
crisco/shortening
1 c
milk
2
eggs, unbeaten
1 tsp
vanilla extract

MAKE CAKE AND COOL. MAKE VANILLA, BUTTERCREAM FROSTING, FROST THE CAKE

chocolate, unsweetened squares
1 Tbsp
butter, stirred into melted chocolate

Directions Step-By-Step

Sift flour,sugar,baking powder and salt. Set aside. Soften shortening in a large bowl. Stir in the dry ingredients, add 3/4 cup milk, beat 2 mins. Add eggs, vanilla and last of the milk. Beat 1 minute more.

Preheat oven 350 degrees.
Prepare a 9X13X2 inch pan, grease and dust with flour (or use two 9-inch layers). Pour in batter. Bake 30-35 mins.

Cool the cake. Prepare frosting and spread on cooled cake.

Melt the chocolate, cool slightly, then spread on hardened white frosting. This will harden. I like to refrigerate it to hasten the process.
