This cake was inspired by my niece Catie Mae who is what she calls herself a"TREE HUGGER". For her birthday I made her this red eyed tree frog cake..I get inspired by what people enjoy and then I create from there.I have done many cakes, but this one is a nice one, great for SPRING or a birthday, it can be done in many different ways.it just takes your imagination to bring it to life.I hope you all try it and enjoy it as much as I have.

betty crocker yellow cake mix
follow box direction for cake mix
1 large
wilton white cake icing ( already prepared)
1 oz
green food paste, others as desired
1 medium
edible image for partial background

decorating tips, shell, star,writing, leaf
1 large and 1 small spatula
1 pkg
plastic icing bags
1 bunch
foliage/flowers( from arts n crafts store)

frog, ( this one i did as a red eyed tree frog)
acrylic paints if needed..for unedible things

pam spray or cake release
2 Tbsp
flour for dusting cake pan

Directions Step-By-Step

ONCE YOU HAVE ALL YOUR INGEDIENTS AND SUPPLIES: BEGIN BY SPRAYING PAN, OR PANS WITH PAM OR USE CAKE RELEASE, IF USING PAM YOU WILL HAVE TO DUST THE PAN WITH A BIT OF FLOUR SO CAKE WILL NOT STICK TO PAN
PREPARE CAKE MIX AS ON THE BOXES DIRECTION FOR SIZE OF PAN USING, ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS, BAKE CAKE FOR TIME REQUIRED ON THE BOX..IF USING MORE THAN ONE CAKE MIX, IT MAY REQUIRE EXTRA BAKING TIME, MAKE SURE YOU TEST THE CAKES MIDDLE FOR DONENESS USNG A KNIFE OR CAKE TESTER BY POKING THE MIDDLE OF CAKE, IF CAKE IS DONE UTENSIL BEING USED WILL BE CLEAR OF ANY CAKE RESIDUE, IF CAKE BATTER IS NOT DONE CAKE WILL BE ON UTENSIL, BAKE A BIT LONGER AS NEEDED 5 MINUTE INTERVALS AND RETEST MIDDLE. REMOVE CAKE FROM OVEN WITH OVEN MITTS.
TO RELEASE THE CAKE EASILY, RUN A BUTTER KNIFE AROUND THE INSIDE EDGES OF THE PAN, THEN BY HOLDING THE PANS SIDES, SHAKE IT LIGHTLY UP AND DOWN TO LOOSEN IT. LET CAKE COOL ON A CAKE RACK OR ON THE BOTTOM PORTION OF THE SAME PAN THAT YOU USED TO BAKE THE CAKE, OR ON A CAKE BOARD; ABOUT AN HOUR, AND PREPARE YOUR TOPPINGS WHILE CAKE IS COOLING.
YOU CAN ALSO DO THE PREPING OF EVERYTHING NEEDED FOR THE DECORATING WHILE YOUR CAKE IS BAKING AS WELL.THIS ALLOWS YOU THE TIME TO GET DONE MUCH QUICKER.

TAKE YOUR ICING AND IN A MEDIUN MIXING BOWL PUT ABOUT 3 TO 4 LARGE SPOONFULS IN BOWL,USING THE TINES OF A FORKTIP OR TOOTHPICK ADD YOUR GREEN COLORING PASTE TO THE ICING..USE A FORK TO STIR, ADD MORE COLORING TO GET THE DESIRED COLOR.
TAKE YOUR FOLIAGE THAT YOU BOUGHT AND CUT IT DOWN TO THE SIZES YOU WANT IT TO BE, SOME PIECES SHORTER SOME LONGER THAN OTHERS YOU CAN ALSO USE JUST PORTIONS OF THE FOLIAGE.
IF YOUR FROG IS THE RIGHT TYPE, YOU DONT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO IT, BUT IF IT IS A DIFFERENT COLOR THEN YOU WANT FOR YOUR CAKE, USE SOME ACRYLIC PAINT TO PAINT IT TO THE DESIRED COLORS AND SET ASIDE TO DRY, IT MUST BE COMPLETELY DRY OR IT WILL RUIN THE CAKE SINCE ACRYLIC IS NOT EDIBLE TIP:( YOU CAN DUST IT A BIT AFTER IT HAS DRIED WITH FLOUR SO THAT IT WILL NOT SWEAT ON THE CAKE IF IT IS IN A HOT ROOM, THEN BLOW OFF THE EXCESS FLOUR OR BRUSH IT OFF WITH A PASTRY BRUSH)
NOW LAY EVERYTHING ASIDE UNTIL YOUR CAKE IS COOLED COMPLETLY, ALWAYS TEST IT BY TOUCHING IT TO MAKE SURE THE WHOLE CAKE HAS COOLED.

NOW THAT YOUR CAKE IS COOLED. BEGIN BY BRUSHING OFF ANY UNWANTED CRUMBS FROM YOUR CAKE, THEN BASE THE CAKE WITH WHAT IS CALLED A BASE COAT OF ICING, OR CRUMB COATING, THIS IS BEST SO THAT WHEN YOU PUT YOUR REGULAR ICING COAT ON THERE WILL BE NO CRUMBS IN EYES VIEW..ONCE THAT HAS SET FOR A COUPLE MINUTES NOT STICKY TO TOUCH. ICE THE CAKE AGAIN TO THE DESIRED THICKNESS, THEN SMOOTH IT OUT WITH A LARGER SPATULA SO THERE IS NO LUMPS ON YOUR CAKE. MOST OF THE CAKE WILL BE COVERED BY THE FOLIAGE AND EDIBLE IMAGE SO REALY SMOOTH IS NOT NECESSARY..THE MIDDLE ALTHOUGH SHOULD BE FREE OF LUMPS AND BUMPS FOR THE EDIBLE IMAGE.

NOW THAT YOUR CAKE IS ICED TO THE DESIRED THICKNESS, IN TE MIDDLE OF YOUR CAKE, ARRANGE YOUR EDIBLE IMAGE.(ALWAYS WHEN REMOVING AN EDIBLE IMAGE USE THE EDGE OF YOUR SMALL SPATULA AND RUN IT UNDER THE IMAGE AND CARDBOARD IT IS ON SLOWLY AS NOT TO TEAR IT) ONCE LOOSENED FROM BACKING, PUT IT IN THE CENTER OF THE CAKE.
(MAKE SURE CAKE HAS A WET ICING FEEL OTHERWISE THE IMAGE WILL NOT STICK TO THE CAKE)
AFTER THIS IS DONE THEN PIPE YOUR SHELL BORDER ON BOTH TOP AND BOTTOM EDGES OF THE CAKE, YOU CAN USE OTHER TIPS IF YOU CHOOSE..ITS YOUR CAKE HAVE FUN WITH IT HOWEVER YOU DESIRE.
START IN THE MIDDLE FROM THE EDIBLE IMAGE EDGES AND WORK YOUR WAY OUTWARD WITH YOUR FOLIAGE.
BUILD YOUR FOLIAGE AROUND THE IMAGE, MAKING IT HAVE A 3-D EFFECT AS YOU BUILD IT.
ONCE YOU HAVE AQUIRED THE DEPTH LOOK YOU WANT THEN ADD YOUR FROG, AND SOME OTHER LITTLE BUGS( UNEDIBLE OF COURSE , EDIBLE IF YOU CAN FIND OR MAKE SOME) YOU CAN PIPE SOME LEAVES AND SOME FLOWERS IN BETWEEN THE FOLIAGE TO GIVE IT MORE DEPTH..
ONCE THIS IS DONE, USE THE WRITING TIP TO WRITE A MESSAGE ABOVE AND BELOW THE EDIBLE IMAGE..OR LEAVE BLANK.
THIS TECHNIQUE CAN BE DONE NOT ONLY FOR THIS CAKE, BUT FOR OTHERS, TRY IT OUT, IT IS FUN AND THE FINISHED PRODUCT IS AMAZING..
