This is a recipe that has been around a long time but every time I make it people rave about it. Very tasty and not your typical cake.

Ingredients For chocolate chip date cake

  • 1 1/2 c
    chopped dates
  • 1 1/2 c
    boiling water
  • 1 tsp
    baking soda
  • 1 c
    sugar
  • 3/4 c
    shortening
  • 2
    eggs
  • 1 1/2 c
    all purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp
    salt
  • 1 tsp
    soda
  • 1 tsp
    vanilla
  • TOPPING
  • 1/2 c
    chopped walnuts
  • 1 c
    semi-sweet mini chocloate chips
  • 1/2 c
    brown sugar, firmly packed

How To Make chocolate chip date cake

    Chop dates and place in a medium size heat proof bowl. Add baking soda and pour boiling water over dates and soda. Stir and cool. Water will foam up.

    Cream shortening and sugar until well creamed. Add eggs and beat until smooth

    Mix together dry ingredients in separate bowl.

    Drain cooled water from dates and alternately add flour and date water to creamed sugars. Start and end with flour adding a little of each at a time. Stir in vanilla.

    Grease and flour a 9x13 cake pan. Pour batter in pan.

    Mix topping ingredients together in medium size bowl and sprinkle on top of batter.

    Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Bake until toothpick comes out with a moist crumb on the toothpick. Do not overbake.
