all purpose flour
semi-sweet mini chocloate chips
brown sugar, firmly packed
1Chop dates and place in a medium size heat proof bowl. Add baking soda and pour boiling water over dates and soda. Stir and cool. Water will foam up.
2Cream shortening and sugar until well creamed. Add eggs and beat until smooth
3Mix together dry ingredients in separate bowl.
4Drain cooled water from dates and alternately add flour and date water to creamed sugars. Start and end with flour adding a little of each at a time. Stir in vanilla.
5Grease and flour a 9x13 cake pan. Pour batter in pan.
6Mix topping ingredients together in medium size bowl and sprinkle on top of batter.
7Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. Bake until toothpick comes out with a moist crumb on the toothpick. Do not overbake.
