Peel core and slice apples and sprinkle with mixture of the brown sugar and cinnamon.
. Cream butter and sugar and unbeaten eggs 1 at a time, stirring well. Add lemon rind, add flour and baking powder, a little at a time. Fold carefully.
. Cover with about half of the sliced apples. Spread on remaining half of batter. Arrange rest of apple slices in pattern on top. Bake 1 hour at 350.
