This is sooo much better instead of making one at a time! It is essential for using 2 baking sheets. 1 very hot & the second room temperature bringing the surface temperature down by insulating the eggs from too much heat. Pefect!

How To Make oven - eggs in a hole...for a crowd
-
1Adjust oven racks to lowest & top positions, place rimmed baking sheet on lowest rack & heat oven to 500 degrees F. Spread 1 side of each bread slice evenly with 2 1/2 tbsp butter. Using a 2 1/2" biscuit cutter or drinking glass, cut out & remove circle from the center of each piece of bread.
-
2Remove hot sheet from the oven & melt remaining butter on it, tilting to distribute evenly. Place bread circles down center of sheet & bread slices on either side of circles, buttered side up, in a single layer. Return sheet to lowest oven rack & bake until bread is golden brown, about 5 minutes, rotating & flipping slices & circles halfway through baking time.
-
3Remove sheet from oven & set inside 2nd (room temperature) rimmed baking sheet. Crack 1 egg into each hole. Season with salt & pepper. Bake on top oven rack until whites are barely set, about 5 minutes. Add slices of cheese, if using, & bake an additional minute.
-
4Place sheets on a wire rack & let sit until whites are completely set, about 2 minutes. Serve immediately.
